I Visconti e la leggenda sul simbolo di Famiglia

Tarantasio è un drago leggendario che terrorizzava gli abitanti del lago Gerundo nella zona di Lodi. Si riteneva che divorasse i bambini, che fracassasse le barche ed il suo fiato pestilenziale ammorbava l'aria e causava una strana malattia denominata febbre gialla. A testimonianza di ciò resta il nome di una frazione di Cassano d'Adda denominata Taranta appunto.

Leggenda[modifica]Secondo le leggende popolari, il lago Gerundo sarebbe stato abitato da un dragone chiamato Tarànto o più comunemente conosciuto come Tarantasio, il quale si sarebbe nutrito soprattutto di bambini. Sono sorte poi numerose leggende riguardo al drago, le quali sono tutte accomunate dalla concomitanza tra l'uccisione di Tarànto e il prosciugamento del lago. Alcune fonti popolari attribuiscono il prosciugamento e la bonifica del lago a san Cristoforo, che avrebbe sconfitto il drago, o a Federico Barbarossa. La più suggestiva riguarda l'uccisione del drago da parte del capostipite dei Visconti, il quale avrebbe poi adottato come simbolo la creatura sconfitta, ovvero il biscione con il bambino in bocca.

Tarantasio is a legendary dragon that terrorized the inhabitants of the lake Gerundo in the area of Lodi. It was believed that devoured children, smashing boats and its pestilential breath the air and caused a strange disease called yellow fever. Evidence of this is the name of a hamlet of Cassano d'Adda called Taranta precisely.

Legend [edit] According to popular legend, the lake Gerundo was inhabited by a dragon called Taranto or more commonly known as Tarantasio, which would feed mostly on children. Were raised then numerous legends about the dragon, which are all linked by the simultaneous killing of Taranto and the draining of the lake. Some popular sources attribute the drainage and reclamation of Lake St. Christopher, which would defeat the dragon, or Frederick Barbarossa. The most striking concerns the killing of the dragon by the founder of the Visconti, who was later adopted as a symbol of defeat the creature, with the baby or the snake in his mouth.
