Tips? No thanks.


A truly original ranking reveals the moves of even the most miserly.


Different countries, different customs: sometimes the tips are included in the bill, other times they are mandatory, others are of courtesy. But most of the time, let's face it, we would like to avoid. Italians at least they think so, generous, caring people, but that is confirmed to be among the most tight-fisted on the road. To detect and Tripadvisor, which provides tips on vacation are a real must: more than a tourist on two, exactly 55% of respondents said the fact that economic crisis did not affect the quantity and quality of tips and only 41% of travelers has partially reduced the "extras." Speak for site users: 6,000 opinion leaders of the European community, more than 2,000 of them Italian.

More than a European traveler in three states to give always tip during the holidays, but most seem to be inclined to bestow the French tourists, which with 47% of the vote in beating generosity Anglos (43%) and Spain (37 %). The more greedy? Here we are, we are the ones that only 20% of respondents said inclined to lavish holiday tips and 13% say they do not give "extra", against an EU average of 7%.

Gratuities included in the bill or not? 36% of Italian respondents would like to remove the tips for inclusion in the bill. Even 33% of French tourists, 32% of Spaniards and 31% of Britons think the same way. It is also frequent (55%) that travelers are informed about local customs in terms of tips. It is mainly the Italians to be informed (76%) and Spaniards (51%), which clearly exceed the French (44%) and British (40%).

United States and Africa have been described, respectively by 51% and 12% of European respondents, as the countries in which the passengers of the community feel more obligated to tip. Followed by Europe (11%), which completes the Top 3 of the destinations where the "extra" are needed most.

The tips are fine, but only if well-earned: 21% of European travelers feel compelled to tip "because it is right", while the majority of respondents (47%) without an extra only when expectations have been fully met. The most demanding are the French, who in 42% of reported cases to reward waiters and staff only in cases of excellent service, as shared by the 35% of Spaniards, 28% of Britons and 10% of Italians.
